International Barcode of Life project (iBOL)

Website: www.ibolproject.org

The International Barcode of Life Project (iBOL) was formally activated in October 2010. Its first phase (2010-2015) will lead to the acquisition of DNA barcode records for 5M specimens representing 500K species. iBOL will release each barcode record in two phases. The initial phase will release barcode sequence(s), trace files, high-level (ordinal) taxonomic assignment, GPS co-ordinates and the country of collection. This phase of data release will occur automatically on a quarterly basis in datafiles posted on this page as well as at GenBank. The second phase of data release will involve a more precise taxonomic assignment and ancillary data, such as images, for each specimen.

The data released to date consists of records for 1,055,808 sequences analyzed at the Canadian Centre for DNA Barcoding at the University of Guelph and the Centre for Environmental & Molecular Algal Research at the University of New Brunswick during the first year of iBOL ramp-up (July 1, 2009 - June 30, 2010) and the first 33 months of the officially activated iBOL project (July 1, 2010 - Mar 31, 2013). These specimens are derived from many collaborators in many nations.

Canadian Barcode of Life Network

Website: www.bolnet.ca

The Canadian Barcode of Life Network represents the first national network dedicated to large-scale DNA barcoding. The network itself is made up of nearly 50 researchers from across the country who are working towards the development and application of DNA technologies in the area of species identifications. Initial work focuses on barcoding species which are of particular economic, social, or environmental importance. These efforts promise to make important contributions to biodiversity research, and maintain Canada's place as a leader in the development of DNA barcoding.
